Elk Creek Redwood Species in Danger: An Allegation

(Revised 7/15/2002)

The redwood species is doing well in Elk Creek. While MRC is harvesting in Elk Creek, company policy and California Department of Forestry regulations would not permit a dramatic alteration to the species mix in Elk Creek or any other watershed in the Company's ownership. The state policy requires a certain level of forest retention when using unevenaged management (selection, group selection) and requires a certain standard of stocking when using even-aged management. These standards vary, depending on the site classification (the ability of the land to grow trees). Beyond this, the vibrancy of the redwood species would make it difficult to eliminate redwood from an area where it is present to the extent that redwood is present in Elk Creek.
