Jerome C. Ford - Letter of 16 April 1886

Mendocino April 16th 1886

Mendocino Lumber Co.

Dear Sirs — Your letters of the 12, 13 and 14th are at hand. On account of bad roads, the mail gets in late in the evening now.

I returned yesterday after a hard trip to the woods. The river is up some but has not been high enough yet to drive logs. There was nearly a full head of water let off the East Branch dam last week and the dam was to be full last night so that I hope by this time the logs are driven out. On the main river we will not get logs unless there is a large freshet as the logs are not sacked in. Perkins has driven most of his logs out of the gulch where his dam is. He let off two heads last week and the dam was full when I was there but the logs were not sacked in. It rained last night and looks so much like a heavy rain now that I think Perkins will drive out about all his logs and they will come down. The Swan finished loading yesterday noon. Emma ...is outside. The Electra will not be able to take lumber until the Swan gets away and by that time it may be rough.

I had a long talk with Perkins and went over the lumber he is going to put in this year. It is good size and will turn out more clear than last year. If we are willing to advance him $3 on all logs over the 8000 he puts in this year, I think he will agree to deduct 20% from all logs he put in this year. The scaler will take the size and length of the log and thus he feeds in 1260 ft to the saw. He is coming in the last of the month so let me know your news on this matter.

Yours truly

J.C. Ford
