Dear Mr. Brown,
Thank you for your letter of August 25, 2000 "encouraging the county to look seriously into the allegations" raised in the August 15th advertisement that appeared in the New York Times against the Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) and the Forest Stewardship Council. Your letter was discussed at length yesterday by the Mendocino Forest Council a standing committee of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors.
Generally, the Council strongly supports the concepts established under the FSC guidelines as a viable alternative to standard timber industry practices. Additionally, a majority of the Council publicly expressed their appreciation and sincere hope that the Mendocino Redwood Company is successful in achieving their publicly stated resource conservation goals.
The Council felt it would be impossible to address every issue raised in the NY Times advertisement in a single meeting. The Council has opted to begin a dialog between MRC and those who have raised the allegations in the hope of reaching an acceptable level of detente by all parties.
On behalf of the Council and the County of Mendocino I would like to thank you for your interest in this matter. If you have any questions or further concerns, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
Sincerely,
Gregory A. Giusti
