Letter to the Editor of the Mendocino Beacon
Impressed!
In July, a number of residents of Albion sent a petition to the companies/individuals who use Albion Ridge Road to haul cut timber stating our concern that "there is an accident waiting to happen" up here. We pointed out some specific concerns primarily having to do with the need to keep a reduced speed, not just use brakes, and generally be cautious and courteous to those of us who live here and would like to feel more safe on our road.
The good news is that both of the major logging companies responded very favorably and are setting some new attitudes and request of truckers in motion. This is very much appreciated by the residents and speaks well of a genuine effort to be good "neighbors." Mendocino Redwood Co. even sent letters to all those who signed the petitions stating what they were doing to help us out. I'm impressed! The Campbell Timberland Management Co. asked truckers recently on the road to reduce the speed and the brakes, plus limit the hours of operation so as not to disturb too many folks too early. It definitely made a difference.
I want to thank these companies publicly for their understanding and willingness to work with us to come into harmony. The truckers also deserve a big thanks for understanding the needs of the people to feel safe on our road and for driving with a new awareness. There were many petitioners who praised the drivers for their skills and for going the speed limit near town. Bouquets to all!
